How this equipment fouls

Because the indoor head sits inside the occupied space with only a coarse filter, dust reaches the coil and the blower wheel directly. The wheel's many small blades trap dust in a layer that is invisible from outside the unit, and the permanently damp tray below the coil grows biofilm — the usual source of the musty smell that appears when the unit restarts.
