What to expect

What you can safely do yourself, and what you cannot

Three parts of a dryer exhaust are genuinely homeowner-serviceable, and doing them between professional visits meaningfully extends the interval. Clear the lint screen after every load, then once a season pull the screen right out and wash it in warm soapy water: fabric softener and dryer sheets leave an invisible film on the mesh that restricts airflow long before it looks dirty. Hold it under a running tap — if water pools on the mesh instead of running straight through, it needs washing. Second, pull the dryer forward and vacuum the floor and the wall behind it, including the lint that collects under the drum. Third, walk outside and watch the exterior hood while the dryer runs: the flap should be pushed open by a steady stream of warm air.

What you should not attempt is the run itself. The section inside the wall, any vertical run to a roof, and shared stacks in a plex or condo need a rotary brush on a powered rod plus vacuum containment at the appliance end. Without containment, brushing pushes lint into the room rather than out of the duct.

Never use chemicals in a dryer exhaust. There is no cleaner, foam, solvent or deodorizer that belongs in a lint-carrying line, and several are outright dangerous next to a heat source. Cleaning here is purely mechanical: brush, agitate, extract. Skip the leaf-blower method circulating online too — blowing air from the appliance end tends to compact lint against the first elbow rather than removing it.

The transition hose is where most problems start

The short length connecting the dryer to the wall is the part that fails most often, and its material matters. White vinyl and thin foil accordion hoses sag between the ridges, trap lint in every corrugation, and can be crushed flat when the dryer is pushed back into place. Rigid or semi-rigid metal holds its shape and presents a smooth wall for lint to slide along, which is what a technician will recommend replacing a foil hose with. If you can see an accordion-style hose behind your dryer, that single component is likely doing more harm than everything inside the wall.

Length and bends matter more than people expect. Every elbow behaves like several extra feet of straight run as far as airflow is concerned, so a short path with three bends can breathe worse than a long straight one. This is why two units in the same building can need very different cleaning intervals.

Two Montreal-specific failures worth knowing

In deep winter, warm moist exhaust condenses where the line meets cold exterior air, and the damp lint at that junction freezes into a plug that no amount of drying cycles will clear. A dryer that suddenly takes twice as long during a cold snap, then behaves normally in a thaw, is describing an ice blockage rather than a lint blockage.

In spring, exterior hoods with a missing or stuck flap are a favourite nesting spot for birds, and a nest is both a complete blockage and a fire load. Ground-floor and basement laundry in plexes often exhausts through a long horizontal path to reach an exterior wall — exactly the geometry that accumulates fastest — while upper-floor units in the same building may vent through a much shorter path and need attention half as often.
